Cumaru Decking

Cumaru decking wood is hardwood lumber that is used for residential and commercial decking, flooring and heavy construction.

History of Cumaru

cumaru deckingThe Cumaru tree can grow up to 100 feet tall. The tree is found in Central and South America. The cumaru tree is part of the Dipteryx Odorata family. The Cumaru tree is unique because it produces seeds known as "Tonka beans". Tonka beans contain a chemical called coumarin, which produces pleasant odors that emulate scents of vanilla, cinnamon, and almonds. These types of seeds are used in the perfume industry. The indigenous people of the land also used Tonka beans for "magical/medicinal purposes" they believed by digesting the beans they would cure depression, confusion and other mental health issues.

Uses of Cumaru today!

While the seeds serve their purpose, the seeds are not the only reason why Cumaru lumber is used by many. Cumaru is used in many outdoor and indoor decking projects including flooring, decking, docks, benches, bridges, heavy construction, piers and boardwalks.

If you are looking for a tough solid wood, built to last, Cumaru decking wood is definitely for you. Cumaru decking wood is great for heavy construction and outdoor decking projects because:

  • It's resistant to fungi, insects, and marine boring insects
  • It's water repellant
  • It's' rot resistant
  • Its resistant to damage
  • It's extremely dense
  • It has a Janka Hardness of 3540

Many individuals prefer to use Cumaru decking wood for their decking projects because it is environmentally friendly. Cumaru is harvested and managed in forest projects that protect the environment. In addition to being environmentally friendly, many individuals choose Cumaru because of the extra strength and durability of the decking wood. It has a Janka hardness of 3540 and is on average 5 xs harder than pine, cedar and redwood. In fact, the decking wood is 10 xs stronger than most composite decking woods. The hardness makes this type of decking wood the ideal decking wood for heavy projects such as docks, boardwalks, and bridges.

Cumaru decking wood is a very dense and durable hardwood. Therefore it will be slightly challenging to work with. That's why it's important to know what to expect when working with the wood. It can be difficult to saw the decking wood, and it can also be difficult to glue due to its density and oily feel.  It is highly advisable that you use carbide tipped saw blades, and hardened steel or drill bits. For best results, it's mandatory that you pre-drill holes in the decking wood for easy installation.
